Do I need a permit for a greenhouse in Belgium or the Netherlands?

In most cases, installing a greenhouse falls under the permit exemption. The exact rules can vary by municipality. If in doubt, it is advisable to check with your local authority. On request, we can always provide a construction sketch with the most suitable dimensions to submit to the municipality.

What types of glass are available?

Several types of glass are possible (for example clear glass, hammered glass and safety glass). The best choice depends on your use, the desired light transmission and maintenance requirements. We are happy to advise you based on your greenhouse and growing plans.

Concrete foundation or aluminium foundation: which suits my garden?

A concrete foundation offers maximum stability and is ideal for soft or uneven ground. An aluminium foundation is a neat and efficient solution when the ground allows it. The right choice depends on the soil, the level and the desired finish.

Can a greenhouse withstand winter weather (wind and snow)?

Thanks to our robust construction, a greenhouse can handle strong gusts of wind. In the event of exceptional snowfall, we recommend removing snow in time to avoid overloading. We are happy to look at which setup and foundation best suits your location.

What should I look out for when buying a greenhouse?

The most important question to ask yourself beforehand is what you want to grow in it. Depending on your growing plans, it is often wiser to choose a sufficiently large greenhouse straight away.

Many gardeners primarily want to grow tasty tomatoes. Tomatoes are often already planted in the greenhouse in mid-April and generally keep producing until the end of October. This means that a large part of the available space needs to be reserved for tomatoes.

If you also like to experiment with other crops, such as beans, lettuce, cauliflower, etc., it is important that the greenhouse is spacious enough so that you are not constantly faced with a lack of space.

Our greenhouses can be extended both in length and in width afterwards, but it is considerably more economical to choose the right dimensions from the start. A slightly larger model is often not much more expensive to buy, whereas an extension afterwards can be.

What is the lifespan of a greenhouse?

Our greenhouses are designed to last a lifetime. Thanks to their steel construction, they are exceptionally durable and can often be reused across multiple generations. It regularly happens that we dismantle a greenhouse we installed 25 years ago for a grandfather, and give it a new life with the grandchildren.

Although a few components require some maintenance, this is kept to a minimum. Because we are the manufacturer ourselves and work exclusively with our own profiles, we can also guarantee that all necessary spare parts will remain available in the future. This means you can keep using your greenhouse carefree for many years to come.

Can a greenhouse be installed anywhere?

Of course it is best to place a greenhouse in a sunny spot in the garden. Thanks to our robust construction, it can also withstand strong gusts of wind, so it is not necessary to choose a sheltered spot.

In most cases, installing a greenhouse falls under the permit exemption. If in doubt, it is advisable to check with your local authority. On request, we can always provide a construction sketch with the most suitable dimensions to submit to the municipality.

Why buy a greenhouse from Hobbyserres Stappaerts?

Thanks to our many years of experience — passed down from father to son — and the fact that we are not only greenhouse builders but also hobby gardeners ourselves, we know better than anyone what truly matters to a hobby gardener.

1. Rock-solid quality.
A greenhouse must above all be robust, so that it remains firmly upright even in exceptional storms. We distinguish ourselves by developing our greenhouses from our experience with professional horticultural greenhouses. That is why we always start from a steel frame, which is far stronger than the usual aluminium profiles.

This also makes our greenhouses taller, with numerous advantages as a result: a more constant temperature, more comfort and a more pleasant feeling during use.

Furthermore, our greenhouses are entirely produced and assembled by ourselves, which means we remain closely involved at every step and can guarantee the highest quality.

2. A fair price.
Nobody wants to pay too much. We achieve this by supplying exclusively directly to the end customer. No intermediaries who also need to earn a margin or commission.

3. Clear communication.
You always have direct contact with experts, so that you can purchase with confidence and know that you will always be helped quickly and correctly in the future if something unexpected should happen.

When is the best time to buy a greenhouse?

In autumn. The weather is often still pleasant, which means you usually still feel like working in the garden. This way you can already prepare the ground, so that as soon as the sun starts shining again in spring, you can get started with gardening straight away.

Is heating a greenhouse worthwhile?

For professional growers, heating the greenhouse is almost a necessity. For them it is their livelihood, so all plants need to be able to grow and flower optimally. For a hobby gardener, however, it is ecologically irresponsible to heat the greenhouse with electricity or fossil fuels. It may sometimes be necessary to heat the greenhouse slightly to protect plants from frost.

To do this in an ecologically responsible way, composting can be done in the greenhouse. In a compost heap, temperatures of 50 to 65°C can be reached. By placing this compost heap in the greenhouse, a natural heat source is created that raises the temperature sufficiently so that the plants do not freeze. An additional advantage is that the compost can afterwards be worked into the soil, adding extra nutrients and structure.

How do I get a better yield in a greenhouse?

When the yield in the greenhouse falls short, the cause is often in the soil. In that case it is wise to have the soil analysed, so that you know whether there are shortages or surpluses of certain minerals. Most larger garden centres can carry out such tests and can then advise you which products to add to improve the soil structure and composition.
